Using fillers can make your Spanish sound more authentic and conversational. Here are five commonly used fillers with examples:

  • O sea – "I mean"
    Example: O sea, no quiero ir porque estoy cansado.
    (I mean, I don’t want to go because I’m tired.)

  • Es que – "It’s just that"
    Example: Es que no tengo tiempo para terminarlo hoy.
    (It’s just that I don’t have time to finish it today.)

  • Es como – "It’s like"
    Example: Es como si todo estuviera en mi contra hoy.
    (It’s like everything is against me today.)

  • Bueno – "Well"
    Example: Bueno, ¿vamos al cine o no?
    (Well, are we going to the movies or not?)

  • Entonces – "So"
    Example: Entonces, ¿qué decidiste hacer al final?
    (So, what did you decide to do in the end?)

2. 5 Reflexive Verbs That Aren’t Literal

These reflexive verbs go beyond their basic meanings; using them correctly will boost your fluency. Check out these examples:

  • Romperse – "To break" (e.g., a bone)
    Example: Me rompí la pierna jugando fútbol.
    (I broke my leg playing soccer.)

  • Caerse – "To fall"
    Example: Me caí de la bicicleta ayer.
    (I fell off the bike yesterday.)

  • Lesionarse – "To injure oneself"
    Example: Se lesionó la espalda levantando pesas.
    (He injured his back lifting weights.)

  • Perderse – "To get lost"

  • Indispensable – Essential
    Example: Es indispensable estudiar todos los días para mejorar.
    (It’s essential to study every day to improve.)

  • Contundente – Forceful, compelling
    Example: Su argumento fue contundente y cambió mi opinión.
    (His argument was forceful and changed my opinion.)

  • Inagotable – Inexhaustible
    Example: Tiene una energía inagotable para aprender.
    (She has inexhaustible energy for learning.)

  • Eficaz – Effective
    Example: Este método es muy eficaz para memorizar vocabulario.
    (This method is very effective for memorizing vocabulary.)

  • Desalentador – Discouraging
