📚 Lesson of the Week: Direct and Indirect Object Pronouns

Those small words like lo, la, le, me, te that help you avoid repeating words are called Direct and Object Pronouns.

🔎 What are they?

When you’re talking about a person or thing, you don’t always want to repeat the name.
Object pronouns replace the nouns to make your Spanish more fluent.

🎯 Two Types

✅ Direct Object Pronouns – They replace the thing or person that directly receives the action.
✅ Indirect Object Pronouns – They show who receives the benefit or result of the action.

✏️ What do they look like?

Here’s a handy chart to show the differences between subject pronouns (the ones doing the action), direct object pronouns (what or whom the action is done to), and indirect object pronouns (to whom or for whom the action is done):

Subject Pronoun

Direct Object Pronoun

Indirect Object Pronoun

yo (I)

me (me)

me (to/for me)

(you)

te (you)

te (to/for you)

él / ella / usted (he / she / you-formal)

lo / la (him / her / it)

le (to/for him/her/you)

nosotros (we)

nos (us)

nos (to/for us)

vosotros (you all – Spain)

os (you all)

os (to/for you all)

ellos / ellas / ustedes (they / you all)

los / las (them)

les (to/for them/you all)

Where do the pronouns go?

✅ In most sentences, they go before the conjugated verb:

  • I see her → La veo.

  • I’m reading it → Lo estoy leyendo.

✅ If there’s an infinitive or gerund, you can also attach them at the end:

  • I want to see it → Quiero verlo. OR Lo quiero ver.

  • I’m eating it → Estoy comiéndolo. OR Lo estoy comiendo.

✏️ Let’s practice with these 10 Examples + Audio:
