POR vs. PARA – The Key Differences 📚
+ a 1-page worksheet!
Hola amig@. Feliz martes. Espero estés muy bien.
In one of my recent classes, a student asked me: "What’s the difference between POR and PARA?" I smiled and said, "That’s a topic we need to go over for a few classes to master it, but here’s the most practical difference:
POR → Expresses duration, movement through a place, reason/cause.
PARA → Expresses purpose, end goal, destination”
You don’t need to memorize 20 rules. If you focus on the main difference, you’ll get it right most of the time.
Topic of the Week: POR vs. PARA
Think of POR as the journey and PARA as the destination.
🔹 POR → Duration, reason, movement through a place
🔹 PARA → Purpose, end goal, final destination
✅ POR = "because of," "through," "in exchange for"
✅ PARA = "in order to," "for the purpose of," "toward"
A few examples:
Trabajo por dinero. (I work for money.) → Reason/motivation
Trabajo para ganar dinero. (I work to earn money.) → Purpose/end goal
Voy por el parque. (I walk through the park.) → Movement within a place
Voy para el parque. (I’m heading to the park.) → Final destination
Estudié español por tres años. (I studied Spanish for three years.) → Duration
Estudio español para viajar. (I study Spanish to travel.) → Goal
It's simple, right? Do not overthink it; just ask yourself: Am I talking about the process (POR) or the final goal (PARA)?
Here’s a 1-page worksheet to practice these two confusing and fundamental prepositions:

🎵 Song of the Week: "Adiós" – Gustavo Cerati
This week’s song is Adiós by Gustavo Cerati. It's a great song for vocabulary, though the lyrics are a bit complex. Take your time reading them and try to identify new words and expressions.
